Supporting Carers of all ages throughout Moray
Free Counselling Service for Carers
Our free person-centred counselling service is in collaboration with Moray College which we have recently expanded. It provides a confidential fully supervised and professional support to Carers who may find elsewhere they are faced with long waiting lists or fees they can’t afford. For the college it provides experience for final year students looking for final accreditation. Some continue to volunteer their services after accreditation so as well as new counsellors, some are very experienced.   We also provide a venue for the Young Persons Alcohol Counselling service (YPAC) when they have appointments in the area.

What is Personal Counselling?
The aim of counselling is to enable people to work towards living their lives in a more positive and satisfying way.
The counsellor does not tell you what to do in order to achieve this but will help you to explore any problems in your thoughts, feelings and the way you behave. The counsellor does not present solutions, make judgements or influence your decisions. They are there to work with you and to help you explore the changes you wish to make. Careful listening is the largest part of what all counsellors do.

The service offered is therapeutic counselling and the counsellors mainly use the person-centred approach. This means that the counsellors are committed to being genuine in their relationship with you, are accepting of you and your situation and have a wish to understand. The counsellors’ commitment to provide these conditions creates a safe, supportive environment for you to explore your problems and move forward in your life.

Only you know what you are feeling. The counselling session is for one hour, private and confidential and is taken at your pace. The number of sessions required varies; our initial agreement is for 12 weeks with a review at the end of that period.

All About The Counsellors
The group of counsellors offering this service comprise both qualified counsellors and final year participants on a Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling Course at Moray College. The course itself offers a high standard of training and demands quality and integrity of its members who have prior    experience of counselling and related professions.

The members of the course are either qualified or mature students who have typically worked in the fields of social work, social care, nursing, education and voluntary counselling agencies. The counsellors are members of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (B.A.C.P.) or Counselling and Psychotherapy in Scotland [C.O.S.C.A], and are subject to their Code of Ethics and Practice and their Complaints Procedure.

Supervision is a requirement of the Code of Ethics and allows counsellors to discuss their work in order to look after the clients’ best interests. The regular supervision meetings are also confidential and clients’ names are not used therefore ensuring clients’ identities are protected. Supervision also ensures that the counsellor’s quality and integrity in their relationship with their clients are maintained.
